Did you know that when anglers on the Big Island catch marlin that weigh 1,000 pounds or more, they call them granders? The Kona Coast is known internationally as the marlin capital of the world. Huge blue marlin, mahimahi, swordfish, tuna, sailfish, ono (wahoo), and giant trevallies (ulua), are some of the big-game fish found here.
Most charter boats carry a maximum of six passengers and supply all the equipment, bait, tackle, and lures. No fishing license is needed. Many captains now tag and release marlins. Island tradition states that other fish caught belong to the boat, not you. If you want to bring your catch home for dinner or have it mounted, discuss it with the captain before you book. Also be sure to discuss your fishing skill level before booking your trip. Good luck! |
